Qualitative Analysis by Derivative UV Spectrophotometry(I)

Cho Jung-hwan
Abstract
In the cases of compounds of closely related structures, identification of each com pound from others is not possible in general as long as only UV absorbance sjectra are used. But derivative operation can reveal the pre-existing fine structures of absorbance spectra, which make it possible to differentiate a certain compound from other closely related compounds. In this report, 13 penicillius and 5 cephalosporins were used to demonstrate this feature of derivative operation, and it was shown that all these antibiotics can be defferentiated from others by the comparison of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd derivative spectra which were generated by ¡²UV-SPECMAN¡³ program designed with APPLESOFT BASIC by authors.
